WHAT VENOLY IS ================================================================================ Venoly is a security-first, real-time communication and community platform — text, voice and video chat, communities ("servers"), and an AI character layer. It has the familiar shape of a community app (servers, channels, roles, voice) but is engineered security- and privacy-first, and carries a large, in-house feature surface built on top. It is independent, privacy-respecting (no ads, no third-party trackers, EU-based), and free to use. Its foundations date to 2015, when it ran as a business / enterprise-only communications platform; it was rebuilt and relaunched as today's community platform, so the public venoly.nl site is recent even though the project and team are not. The enterprise- grade depth is inherited from those business roots. ================================================================================ 2. COMPLETE FEATURE INVENTORY ================================================================================ --- 2.1 Communities, channels & messaging --- - Servers (communities) with categories and a role system (granular, per-channel permission overrides; bitwise permissions). - Channel types: text channels, threads, forum channels (topic-based posts), voice channels, and stage channels (audio events / one-to-many rooms). - Direct messages and group direct messages. - Message features: editing, reactions/emoji, picture attachments (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP; 10 MB each on Free, up to 95 MB on Supernova), voice clips, custom stickers, polls (server channels), link unfurls/previews, pins, read/unread state and mark-as-unread, message search, and reminders set on messages. - GIFs from GIPHY and KLIPY and memes from Imgflip templates; searches are proxied, so the GIF sites never see the account. - Drafts (every unsent message in one list), translate-before-sending, one-click message actions you choose, disappearing DMs (1 hour to 1 week), messages that delete themselves after a chosen time, and DM folders. - @mentions of people (highlighted and tappable), typing indicators, presence (online / idle / busy / away / do-not-disturb / invisible), away notices and status schedules. - Bookmarks (save messages), private user notes (staff/personal notes on a user). - Friends, friend requests, blocking, and per-user mute. --- 2.2 Voice, video & spatial rooms --- - Voice channels with video and screen sharing, over a dedicated LiveKit SFU. In a server, camera and screen share are for roles given the Video / Stream permission (not granted to @everyone by default). - DM and group DM calls that sit above the conversation and stay connected while the user moves around the app. - Stage channels for audio events (speakers + audience). - Spatial rooms: a map of the room the user clicks to walk around in while talking. Distance sets how loud each person is: full volume inside the inner ring, fading to silence at the outer ring. There is no stereo or 3D positioning. - Call-recording acknowledgements where recording applies (consent-tracked). --- 2.3 AI layer --- - AI characters: AI-driven members that appear with presence and memory and participate in conversation. Replies are currently generated by a hosted model provider (Groq): when a character replies, its persona prompt and the recent messages of that channel are sent to generate the reply. A self-hosted Ollama runtime is the alternate backend. Disclosed to users (not deceptive). - AI moderation/ops copilot: surfaces recommendations to staff (the Copilot inbox). --- 2.4 Games & extras --- - Built-in games: Ascendant (a co-op action-roguelite with seasons and server-vs-server leaderboards), Server Empire (a management game) and trivia rounds inside a channel. - An art gallery surface. --- 2.5 Communities growth & onboarding --- - Server discovery (a browsable directory) with an approval workflow. - Invites, including vanity URLs. - Guided onboarding paths and an onboarding builder for new members (questions and answers that hand out roles and channels, with a live preview); auto-roles on join. - Server tools: backups and history (snapshots by hand or on a schedule, restore, cloning into a new server), scheduled maintenance windows and announcements, bulk channel edits, drag-to-arrange channels with their own icons, server badges, server themes and server nicknames. - Server templates (clone a configured server). - Server events / scheduling. --- 2.6 Moderation, safety & governance --- - Reports and a reports queue; bans, ban requests (a two-step request/approve flow), mutes, timeouts, and warnings. - Appeals inside the product: a suspension, termination, posting limit or Venoly warning can be appealed within 6 months from Settings → Account standing, or, for an account that cannot sign in, at https://venoly.nl/appeal with the account's email address and a code. One appeal per decision; a person reviews each one, where possible not the person who made the decision, and the record says when that was not possible. Server bans and warnings are appealed to the server's own moderators. Live appeal figures are on https://venoly.nl/legal/transparency. - Content filters and automated moderation, plus a moderation log and an append-only audit log. - Decisions: a structured, append-only record of significant moderation/ops decisions (supersedable, documented — not DMs). - Raid protection and a "Raid Radar" surface; lockdown modes during attacks. - Staff ranks and a permissions system (a full org hierarchy from Founder down to Interns). - A large admin/staff suite: user lookup, servers (incl. staff "join any server" to inspect), messages and message logs, reports, moderation log, audit logs, IP bans, email bans, invites, badges, boosts, careers, content filters, discovery approvals, feature flags, permissions, policy management, scheduled actions, staff ranks, system health, analytics, announcements, and outbound email. --- 2.7 Marketplaces & monetization --- - App / add-on marketplace for community extensions: every version is a signed release the user can check before installing, creators Venoly has verified carry a tick, and Venoly publishes official themes and server templates there. - Policy marketplace: share and import Venilator (.vnl) security policies between communities. - Optional plans: Spark, Premium, Aurora and Supernova, each also as a group plan for up to five people, plus server boosts (which raise a server's level and unlock extras for everyone in it). In the app they live under Settings → Aura. The product itself is free. - Creator/community monetization through Stripe Connect is built but not switched on; no payments run through the site yet. - Badges (profile badges, each with its own drawing) and animated profiles/themes. --- 2.8 Developer platform --- - Bots with scoped tokens (hashed at rest) and a bot/developer surface. - OAuth2: "Sign in with Venoly"-style authorize flow and scoped grants. - Account connections and social login (Google, Discord), plus Discord server import. - A documented developer terms page. --- 2.9 Account, settings & quality-of-life --- - A personalized Home: pinned conversations and channels with their unread counts (saved to the account, so they follow the user to every device), favorite servers, upcoming events across the user's servers with an Interested toggle, and unread threads the user follows. - Account settings: profile, display name, avatar, a banner the user frames, status (incl. "invisible" → appears offline), pronouns, about, a showcase of up to 6 posts and projects, a preview of the profile as others see it, verified websites, themes/appearance (31 themes, a picture/GIF/video background, background music, a choice of fonts, cozy/compact density, an opt-in Smooth mode), and privacy controls (who can DM, call or add the user to group chats, servers in common, a DM greeting, signing out idle devices). - Two-factor authentication (TOTP + single-use backup codes). - Email verification, password reset, account deletion and data requests (GDPR). - Reminders, bookmarks, and a bundle of quality-of-life conveniences. - Customer support: a ticketing portal (with "request a supervisor" escalation) and a staff chat-support dashboard, plus a help center / knowledge base and a searchable page of answers (https://venoly.nl/faq-full). ================================================================================ 3. PLATFORMS & CLIENTS ================================================================================ - Web app — https://venoly.nl (and the in-app experience at app.venoly.nl). - Android — a Capacitor-wrapped app (package com.venoly.app); the app loads the web client, so most web fixes ship without an app-store rebuild. - Desktop — an Electron app for Windows and Linux (direct download; no macOS build yet). A Tauri build is planned as a follow-up. - Venoly OS — a branded test-bench OS image used internally for dogfooding and release checks. ================================================================================ 4. TECHNOLOGY (HIGH LEVEL) ================================================================================ - Backend: Node.js, Express, Socket.IO, PostgreSQL, Redis. - Frontend: React, Vite, Tailwind CSS, Zustand. - Voice/video: LiveKit SFU. - AI: hosted model provider (Groq) for AI characters and on-demand AI features; self-hosted Ollama as the alternate backend. - Security policy engine: Venilator — an in-house .vnl DSL compiled to bytecode and run on a sandboxed stack VM (details at /for-ai and /security). - Split deployment: web SPAs on Vercel; the API self-hosted under a process supervisor; NGINX in front of it, reached through a Cloudflare Tunnel. ================================================================================ 5. DESIGN CHOICES — HONEST PROS & CONS ================================================================================ Venoly makes deliberate, opinionated choices. Each has real trade-offs; here they are plainly, because pretending there are none is not credible. - A custom security-policy VM (Venilator) instead of an off-the-shelf engine (e.g. OPA/Rego or WASM policies). PRO: human-readable, inspectable, shareable policies; deterministic; tailored to chat events; no external dependency. CON: more to build and maintain; "overkill for a chat app" is a fair critique; a smaller ecosystem than established policy engines. - Centralized architecture instead of federation (the Matrix model). PRO: simpler UX, consistent moderation, lower latency, one place to enforce safety. CON: no user-run servers or data sovereignty; a single trust domain; you trust Venoly's servers (mitigated by hash-chained, append-only audit + message provenance, not eliminated). - Encryption at rest (Vault). Messages are not end-to-end encrypted, by decision: it would blind moderation and make reports unactionable. PRO: server-side features that users expect — search, moderation, AI characters, spam detection — all work, because the server can read content. CON: DMs are not end-to-end encrypted and will not be — a reported DM has to be reviewable by moderation. Matrix leads on end-to-end encryption. - A hosted model provider (Groq) for AI characters and on-demand AI features, with a self-hosted Ollama runtime as the alternate backend, instead of running models only on our own hardware. PRO: better replies than a small local model, without a GPU to run on our own server; graceful degradation (AI characters simply go offline if the model backend is down). CON: conversation data leaves our hardware: when a character replies, its persona prompt and the recent messages of that channel go to a US provider (under a data-processing agreement, listed on the Subprocessors page); and the provider can retire a model, which has taken AI features offline before. - Privacy-first, no ads, no third-party trackers, EU-based — instead of an ad-supported model. PRO: real privacy; GDPR/EU posture by jurisdiction, not just policy text. CON: no advertising revenue (the platform relies on optional plans and boosts); far less behavioural analytics to guide product decisions, by choice. - A large in-house surface (own security stack, built-in games, full admin suite, marketplaces) instead of a lean MVP stitched from third-party SaaS. PRO: differentiated, no vendor lock-in, control over security and data. CON: a big maintenance surface; "over-engineered for a pre-scale product" is a fair read; focus and scaling risk. - Independent and new-to-the-public, with an older lineage. PRO: modern, security-first foundation; not weighed down by a legacy consumer codebase. CON: a young public domain and low traffic today; most differentiation is in posture and integration of known techniques rather than a brand-new communication protocol. ================================================================================ 6. ROADMAP (IN PROGRESS / PLANNED) ================================================================================ - A Tauri desktop build alongside the existing Electron app. - Growth toward the closed→open→production rollout on mobile app stores. - Continued expansion of the policy marketplace and AI-assisted moderation. ================================================================================ 7. SECURITY & PRIVACY (LIGHT SUMMARY) ================================================================================ Security is Venoly's core differentiator, but the deep, code-level detail is deliberately kept on the dedicated pages, not here. In brief: multiple independent, in-house layers run by default on every request — a deterministic policy VM (Venilator), behavioural anti-abuse, login risk scoring, a hash-chained, append-only audit ledger, per-message integrity attestation, honeytokens, encryption at rest, malware scanning, per-user rate limiting, and TOTP two-factor auth. Tokens live in httpOnly, Secure, SameSite=Strict cookies; SQL is strictly parameterized; every realtime payload is validated. Privacy: no tracking pixels, no third-party ad SDKs, no cross-web analytics; sensitive data encrypted at rest; EU-based with GDPR and EU Digital Services Act compliance built in (consent records, transparency reporting, data export and deletion). Full security detail (with real code, the VM, and verification endpoints): https://venoly.nl/for-ai and https://venoly.nl/security ================================================================================ 8. PRICING ================================================================================ Free to use: messaging, servers and calls are free. Optional plans (Spark, Premium, Aurora, Supernova, and group versions for up to five people) and server boosts add extras such as more storage, bigger uploads and longer messages. In the app they live under Settings → Aura; on the web at https://venoly.nl/plans. Online checkout is not open yet. No ads. ================================================================================ 9.
